General Background

The Ministry of Local Government Decentralization and Rural Development in November 2017 laid a Legislative Instrument which elevated some Districts to Municipals and carved new ones from existing Metropolitan Assemblies. Through this 38 new Municipals and Districts were created in March 2018, totaling 254 MMDAs nationwide. Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly is one of the ten newly created MMDAs within the Greater Accra Region established by Legislative Instrument (LI 2311.)

The Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly is bounded by Ayawaso West to the North, Ayawaso East to the East & South and Ayawaso Central to the West. The boundary of the Municipality starts from Kawukudi Traffic Light and follows the Obasanjo Highway and turns left at Obasanjo Round About at Pig Farm Junction through the main Kotobabi road towards the Kotobabi Police Station, then right turn on the Alajo road then the immediate turn on left unto the New Town road. The boundary line continues on the New Town road and turns left before the Mallam Atta Market (near the Bank of Africa) and ends at Nima Storm Drain Bridge and follows the drain across the Nima main road and ends at Hilla Liman Highway.

The Assembly currently has Twelve Electoral areas. They are Maamobi East, Sawaba, Ladidi, Maamobi West, Alidu, Senya, Estate, Kwaotsuru, Timber Market, Accra Newtown, IMS and Agbaadzena.

FLOOD RESPONSE MECHANISM

In the event of flooding emergencies within 24hrs, planned response mechanism of the Municipal Assembly led by the NADMO office include;

  • The Operational team of the Assembly will also be activated
  • Aside the operational team, the Disaster Management Committee will also be activated
  • Declare the emergency, convene meeting with partners for information and mobilization by MCE & NADMO
  • Convene a meeting with Municipal Disaster Management Committee by NADMO
  • Appeal for external Aid where necessary by RCC
  • Activate flood Risk contingency plan by ANMA/NADO
  • Deploy a joint rapid needs assessment mission to affected areas by NADMO/stakeholders
  • Start emergency relief based on rapid assessment by NADMO/stakeholders
  • Share information/situation report with members of Disaster Management committee by NADMO
  • Implement a communication plan targeting affected populations and media by DMC
