WORLD MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY 2025

The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and the Education Directorate of the Assembly collaborated to celebrate this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day on May 28, 2025.

The team visited several schools within the Municipality to welcome the pupils and distribute selected school items.

Some highlights included;

  • A community walk with students and teachers from 16 schools, raising awareness about menstrual hygiene.
  • A durbar where public nurses educated pupils on menstrual health and hygiene using UNICEF's child protection facilitation flashcards.
  • Distribution of sanitary pads to participating schools.
  • The Municipal Chief Executive honored the event as special guest.
  • This initiative promoted menstrual hygiene awareness and supported girls' education in the municipality.

    MY FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL

    On Tuesday, the 10th of September, 2024 Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Education Directorate successful organized this year’s “My First Day at School” and made donations of Stationery to the children of class one and Kindergarten. The initiative aimed to support young learners as they begin their educational journey ensuring they have the necessary tools to thrive in their studies.

    The team visited several schools within the Municipality to welcome the pupils and distribute selected school items.

    2024 MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY

    The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, as part of activities to commemorate the 2024 MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY, mobilized school children from seven public schools within the municipality to create awareness on menstrual health and hygiene among pupils. The activity was held at The Church of Pentecost, Maamobi on Tuesday, the 28th day of May, 2024.

    In attendance were nurses from the Health Directorate who facilitated the education, the School Health Education Program (SHEP) Coordinator from the education directorate, the Municipal Education Director, Mr. Emmanuel Techie and the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Assembly. Boxes of Sanitary pads were distributed to the schools that participated in the activity.

    INAUGURATION OF UNIT COMMITTEES & ZONAL COUNCIL MEMBERS OF THE MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY

    On Monday, the 15th day of April 2024, the Assembly held the inaugural ceremony for its Unit Committees. The inaugural ceremony for Kwaotsuru Unit Committees and Zonal Council members took place at the Social Centre of the Municipal Assembly in Accra New Town.

    The event commenced at 10:20 a.m. with the participation of staff, Heads of Departments, the public, representatives from the traditional councils and the security services.

    Those present at the ceremony were the Presiding Member of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly, Hon Augustine Ofori Gyebi, the Municipal Coordinating Director of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly, Mr Jamani Dramani, Deputy Director of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly, Mrs. Hannah Aseidu-Mantey and the Director of the Kwaotsuru Zonal Council, Mr. Desmond Adu-Boahene. The Municipal Coordinating Director of the Assembly Chaired the programme.

    In his welcome remarks, he congratulated the Unit Committee Members for emerging winners at the recently held District Level Elections and urged all present to support them in the execution of their core mandate. He commented on the efforts being made by Government to maintain, sustain and improve the local Government structures to deepen decentralization and local Governance in the country.

    The Municipal Coordinating Director, Jamani Dramani administered the official oath, the Oath of allegiance and the oath of secrecy for the newly elected and appointed Unit Committee Members. In total, twenty-five (25) Unit Committee members were present for the swearing-in ceremony.

    He advised that all should be careful in their line of duty not to divulge classified information when approval had not been given. He further congratulated the Unit Committee Members.

    The Unit Committee members agreed among themselves and selected some members to serve on the council. The members were said to rotate annually to have all unit committees the opportunity serve on the council before their turner is over. The following Members were selected amongst themselves to serve at the Zonal Council for the first term. .

  • The Municipal Electoral Officer conducted the elections for the Chairmanship position. It came to light that only two members picked the nomination forms for the Chairmanship position, in the persons of Hon. Prince Nuhu Ahmed, Assembly Member of Agbadzena Electoral Area and Hon. Ishawu Mohammed, Assembly Member of Kwaotusu Electoral Area.

    After the election, it was noted that, the total number of votes cast was 15. Hon. Hon. Price Nuhu Ahmed had 9 out of 15 votes, representing 60 percent of the total vote casted and Hon. Ishawu Mohammed had 6, representing 40 percent of the total vote casted.

    Subsequently, the EC Officer declared Hon. Prince Nuhu as the winner and Chairman-Elect of the Kwaotsuru Zonal Council

    The Newly Elected Chairman for the Kwaotsuru Zonal Council, Hon. Prince Ahmed Nuhu was sworn into office by the Municipal Coordinating Director. He took the Oath of Office, Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Secrecy In his conclusion, Mr. Jamani Dramani admonished the Unit Committee Members not to allow their sectional, partisan, ethnic and ideological differences to hinder the objectives of achieving the decentralization process in the Municipality

    The inaugural ceremony for Maamobi Unit Committees and Zonal Council members commenced at 12:30 p.m on the premises of the Maamobi Zonal Council office behind the Accra Girls’ High School Maamobi.

    The Municipal Coordinating Director Chaired the program, with the participation of the Presiding Member, Hon Augustine Ofori Gyebi, Deputy Director, Mrs. Hannah Aseidu-Mantey, the Director of the Maamobi Zonal Council, Mrs. Gifty Yayra Havi, the Hon. Assembly Members and selected Staff of the Assembly.

    Mr Jamani Dramani the Municipal Coordinating Director (MCD) swore-in the newly elected Unit Committee Members of the Council. There were Thirty-Five (35) Unit Committee members in all, but only Thirty-Three (33) members were present for the swearing-in ceremony. The MCD counseled members to be cautious in their line of duty, not to disclose classified information without prior approval of authority. He further congratulated the Unit Committee Members.

    After their swearing in, the unit committee members nominated ten (10) members by a unanimous decision to represent them on the Council. The selected members for the council are as follows;

  • The other Unit Committee Members would have their opportunity, since their representation on the council is rotational on yearly basis.

    The Deputy Director Mrs. Hannah Aseidu-Mantey, of the Assembly took Members through the functions of the Zonal Council as well as their respective responsibilities as Unit Committee Members. She particularly emphasized on the need for them to also help improve revenue generation for the Zonal Council and Municipal Assembly and to also ensure sanity in their respective electoral areas. When it got to the election of the Chairman of the Maamobi Zonal Council, Hon. Benjamin Anabilla went unopposed.

    When the Municipal Electoral Officer conducted the elections for the Chairmanship position Hon. Benjamin Anabilla was unanimously approved, as such he is the chairman for another period. Out of a total of Fifteen (15) votes cast, he had Fifteen (15) representing 100 percent of the total votes casted.



    INAUGURATION OF FIRST SESSION OF THE THIRD ASSEMBLY, THE SWEARING –IN OF ELECTED ASSEMBLY MEMBERS AND THE ELECTION OF THE PRESIDING MEMBER

    Two Hundred and Fifty- Nine Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) which Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly was privileged to be part held its Inauguration on Monday, 12th February, 2024 on the swearing – in of Elected Assembly Members and the Election of the Presiding Member at the forecourt of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly for the commencement of work within the Municipality. Across the country this was a four year tenure aimed at fostering local development and governance. The meeting officially commenced with an opening prayer at 11:00am.

    The meeting had a high- turnout. In attendance were key officials including the Honorable Minister of Finance, Member of Parliament of Ayawaso North, Municipal Chief Executive, Municipal Coordinating Director, Headmistress of Accra Girls Senior High School, Pastors, Revered Chiefs, Religious Leaders, Head of Ambulance, Head of Police Service and Head of Fire Service.

    The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) in the person of the Hon. Aminu Mohammed Zakari started his welcome address by warmly welcoming participants and stated that the purpose of the meeting was to inaugurate and to facilitate the swearing – in of the Elected and Appointed Members of the Assembly as part of efforts to deepen our Local Governance and Decentralization System to promote participatory decision making at the Local Level. He thanked the Honorable Minister of Finance, the Representative of the President for the inauguration of the Third (3rd) Assembly of Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly to enhance governance at the Local Level. He said twelve (12) set of elected Assembly Members were retained except one (1).

    The Electoral commissioner of the Assembly in his presentation said Eighteen (18) members were to vote including the Municipal Chief Executive. Members were called uponby the Elctoral Commissioner for the voting process to begin. All nineteen (19) Honorable Members cast their vote. The Electoral Commissioner at the end of the voting process declared the results and the winner for the office of the Presiding Member. At the end of the day, Mohammed Ishawu obtained five (5) votes with the percentage the total votes of 26.31% while Augustine Ofori Gyebi obtained fourteen (14) votes with the percentage of total votes of 73.68%. Two- thirds (2/3) of Honorable members voted for Augustine Ofori Gyebi and he was fially declared the winner. Augustine Ofori Gyebi was sworn into Office as the elected Presiding Member.

    ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF PERSONS WITH DISABLITIES

    On 28th day of December 2023, the Social Welfare and Community Development Department of the Assembly organized and Economic Empowerment Program for Persons With Disabilities in the Maamobi and Accra Newtown communities at the forecourt of the Municipal Assembly. A total of Twenty Seven (27) persons with different forms of disabilities were supported with items including Deep Freezers, Industrial Machines, Hair for Braiding, Hand Sewing Machine and Oven. Others received cash amounts as medical support and a few had funds to purchase shoe making tools and prostheses


    BEADS ARTS TRAINING

    The Culture and Tourism Department of the Assembly organized a five (5) day training program for Twenty Three (23) Females in Beads Arts for the unemployed and unskilled female youth in the Municipality. The training was held at the premises of the Church of Pentecost, Salem Assembly, Pig Farm from the 18th day of December, 2023 to the 22nd December 2023. During the training participants were taken through various types of beads designing and crafting. At the end of the program the participants were able to use beads to produce ladies’ hand bags and slippers. Each participant was given a starter packs to enable her to become self-employed, in this way, the number of unemployment in the municipality will reduce.

    GREEN GHANA

    On the 14th of June, 2022, Staff of Ghana Forestry Commission joined Staff of the Agric Department of Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly to go round the municipality and monitor the growth of seedlings planted during the Green Ghana day project. Some of the places visited are the premises of the Maamobi General Hospital, the new office block, Market area and some selected places in the community. Officials encouraged opinion leaders to assist in the monitoring of the seedling. Assembly members were asked to see to it that the trees are not destroyed.

    At the Ayebeng Cluster of Schools, the Director of Agric tasked the teachers to over see the development of the seedlings and make sure the children take very good care of the trees. The Circuit Supervisor (CS) in his statement said they will find a way of rewarding staff and children who are able to care very well for the plants they care for.


    FARMER'S DAY

    This year’s National Farmers Day was celebrated on Friday the 2nd day of December, 2022. It was the 38th National Farmers’ Day Celebration. The Theme was: Accelerating Agricultural Development through Value Addition- is instructive and an eye opener in the wake of prevailing global challenges.

    The event took place at the Unity Park (Ayebeng Cluster of Schools). The guest of honor for the occasion, Chief Abdul Mumin Joe Wasa applauded farmers for their efforts in feeding the populace.

    The Municipal Chief Executive, the Hon. Mohammed Aminu Zakari in his speech congratulated farmers, all stakeholders and key actors in the Agricultural Value Chain. He said the celebration emphasized the importance of the government’s flagship programme towards the development of the nation. He further said that agriculture is expected to drive the developmental agenda of the Municipality and therefore must attract investment from both public and private sources. He assured that the Municipal Assembly is committed to provide support especially to the youth and women to increase the productivity of farmers.

    The Municipal Director of Agric, Mr. Sydney Mettle in a speech congratulated all stakeholders in the field of agriculture.

    He gave a brief overview of the activities the Agric. Department has been involved with in the course of the year. There was a stand for exhibits where farmers, processors, home gardeners and market women displayed their wares, produce and animals.

    After the speeches and brief musical interludes, the award winners were presented with their award items and certificates.

    A total of Eleven Farmers were awarded. The Overall Best Farmer for this year was Abdulai Ibrahim, the First Runner Up was Adam Moro and the Best Female Farmer was Victoria Zayele Dafaa.


    DISBURSEMENT OF DACF TO PWDs

    As part of the Government efforts to empower Persons with Disabilities and also ensure effective utilization of the common fund for PWDs, The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Assembly address issues of Socio-economic wellbeing of members of the communities within the municipality by undertaking programs and activities to integrate vulnerable persons and groups into mainstream development.

    The disbursement of the District Assembly Common Fund allocated to Persons with Disabilities started with a sensitization session where participants were educated by the Head of the Department of Social Welfare And Community Development on the reason why the items are purchased for them.

    She explained that , government wishes to empower all Persons with Disabilities in the Municipality irrespective of any condition they may find themselves in order to stand for themselves and earn a living that will help them , their families and the society as a whole .

    The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Aminu Mohammed Zakari on his part, told the beneficiaries to make good use of the support items given to them and work hard so that they will be successful in their respective businesses.

    A total of Twenty Three (23) PWD’s were supported with various income generation items such as sewing machines, deep freezers, standing freezer and popcorn machine etc. Another group of five (5) PWD’s were also supported with various cash amounts as startup capital to purchase tools for their businesses.

    The gender breakdown is; Fifteen Males and Thirteen Females.

    ANMA PASSES SANITATION BYE-LAWS.
    The Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly on this day 12th July, 2021 passed a Sanitation Bye Law for the Municipality.
    The bye law which deals with the cleaning of frontage of Residential, Private, Public and Commercial buildings is aimed at keeeping the Municipality clean.
    It states that, the responsibility of cleaning the frontage of a building is the sole responsibility of the owner or occupier of the building. Failure to abide by the Bye-Law will result in the Assembly take up the cleaning and surcharge the owner or occupier and or the owner or occupier will be Prosecuted.

    It was unanimously approved by the members of the Assembly.
